Unveiling the Senior Mural, 2024

By: Carlissia Mayancela/ Junior Writer

Each year Sarrah Dibble-Camburn, an art teacher at Blue Ridge, collaborates with the senior class to create a senior mural. This year, senior Ella Robinson was asked to paint the mural.

Robinson is an athlete, actress, musician and yes, an artist, who has been painting for “a long time.”

It took Robinson a month to finish the senior mural.

“My inspiration,” she says, “is the scheduled fireworks show the seniors will have after graduation.”

In the lower left of the mural there is a simple statement, which Robinson chose herself, that says:  “The fireworks begin tonight. Each diploma is a lighted match. Each senior is a fuse.”

The statement is inspired by Edward Koch’s similar phrasing when he addressed the 1983 graduating class of Polytechnic Institute in New York City and said: ‘So, all the best, class of 1983. The City of New York salutes you. The fireworks begin today. Each diploma is a lighted match. Each one of you is a fuse. Good luck, and God bless.’

The mural will be on display in the dungeon hallway, near the high school art room.
