News In Brief: Students Tour Training Center

By: Noah Martin/Senior Writer

Blue Ridge students interested in pursuing a career as an electrician visited the Scranton Electricians Joint Apprenticeship Training Center (JATC) in South Abington, PA for an academic worksite tour on Tuesday, January 24 and Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

The two trips, organized by BR career counselor Shauna Williams, were for juniors and seniors interested in the workforce but not necessarily college.

Students spent the day with experienced electricians from Scranton, PA and toured the Joint Apprenticeship Training Center.

The tour included hands-on activities designed to help the students decide if an electrical apprenticeship is an opportunity they wish to pursue.

Activities included wiring a light from a breaker box, bending and attaching conduit and thread conduit to a wall, melting metal and making cad-weld connects.

BR senior Dalton Rutter says he is interested in becoming an electrician.

“My favorite part of the visit was when I got to thread the conduit. I would highly recommend this trip if there is another opportunity to go. I learned a lot about what electricians do.”

BR junior Dylan Bradley, who also attended the trip. says: “I really want to be an electrician, so I found the visit very interesting. They had the best of the best there–the electricians really knew their stuff and did a good job.”

Other attendees included: James Barbour; Zach Darrow; John Fiore; Tyler Garvin; Blake Griffis; Cody Gunn; Austin Grover, Nick Laude, Noah Martin, Zach Randall, Brayden Reese, Bruce Sumba and Adam White.

All attendees received a certificate of participation.

Northern Tier Industry and Education Consortium covered the cost of transportation to the training facility.
