Blue Ridge High School students completed a survey asking them to name the top three student athletes at Blue Ridge High School. Out of a long list of student athletes, the top five vote getters are junior Leigha McCain; J.J. Rosa; Emma Button; Libby Zick, and Connor Cranage.
Starting in fifth place is junior Leigha McCain. She was picked for basketball and softball.
McCain says: “I am happy. but also humbled to be recognized.”
She has two Lackawanna League All-Star honorable mentions for softball and has been a varsity starter since her freshman year.
Senior J.J. Rosa was picked as the fourth best athlete for football and basketball.
He says: “I feel great being picked out of all the athletes at the whole school.”
Rosa was mentioned as The Scranton Times Athlete of the Month in August, 2022, and as a first team defensive back two years in a row. In addition, for basketball he was picked for the Lackawanna League All-Star team two years in a row.
Sophomore Emma Button was picked as the third best athlete at Blue Ridge for volleyball, basketball, and track.
She says: “I am happy to be recognized.”
She has achieved third place in Districts, two hundred plus points on varsity her freshman year, and was a First Team All Star.
Junior Libby Zick was picked as the second best athlete at Blue Ridge for volleyball and basketball.
She says: ” It’s a privilege to be recognized as a top athlete. I feel like my hard work is paying off.”
She is a three-time coaches’ choice for First Team, a two-time coaches’ choice for Player of the Year, a three time All-Region, and this year’s Player of the Year.
Lastly, students named junior Connor Cranage as the school’s most outstanding athlete for his achievements in basketball and volleyball.
Cranage says: ” I am honored to be picked as the best athlete at Blue Ridge.”
Cranage was the Lackawanna League Division IV Player of the Year and a First Team All-Star in the Lackawanna League for the 2021-22 basketball season.
Currently he is on track to score a thousand points. At the time this was written, Cranage had banked 973 points.
In volleyball, Cranage has earned multiple recognitions. He was chosen for the Pennsylvania Coaches Association Class II A All-State Team, 2021-22, the Lackawanna League First Team All-Star, 2021-22, and Second All-Region, 2021-22.
