Senior Feature: James Barbour

By: Morgan Thomas/Junior Writer

“You can make a difference or you can make an excuse, but you can’t make both,” says James Barbour.

Barbour says he learned that from his grandfather, Jim Barbour, who owns Barbour Farms in Hallstead, PA.

“I basically worked at my grandfather’s farm since I could walk. I learned the importance of hard work, responsibility and time management from my grandfather.”

Barbour is taking a gap year after graduation and will run his own lawn and garden business this summer in order to help pay his way through college.

The following fall he plans on attending Penn State Scranton for sports management. After college he hopes to start his own business associated with that major.

Barbour says when he looks back at his time in school, his favorite memories involve hanging out with his friends. But, he says, it was “my second mother,” Bobbie McCain who “really helped me through my years of high school.”

According to McCain, “James loves people and social interaction.”

Apparently people love Barbour, too. He was chosen Blue Ridge Homecoming king at the dance in October, 2022.

While at school, Barbour was part of Leo Club for two years; Geocaching for four years; National Honor Society for three years; Envirothon for one year, and student council for four years. His high school sports career included boys basketball, baseball and golf–for all four years.

As he prepares to end his time as a Blue Ridge student, Barbour says his advice for underclassmen is, “Enjoy every moment because time flies and you won’t get it back.”
