Welcome back once more to the final edition of RECAP AT THE RIDGE for the regular season winter sports. Let’s not waste any time and hop right into the weekly games.
The ladies finished their season in a tough manner, dropping both games this week to Montrose and Riverside.
On Monday, Riverside came and conquered the Raider dome, winning 38-17. The Lady Raiders could not find their offense in this game, only shooting 14% from the field. The one bright spot for Blue Ridge was Kaelynn Brant snagging eleven rebounds. For Riverside, Cassidy Merrifield was a key contributor to the win with 17 points that led the Vikings. The home stand and regular season finished with Montrose on Wednesday night where the Raiders fell 33-58.
Mia Snyder and Hayley Pompey were dominant for the Meteors. Mia put up a whopping 27 points and Hayley scored 17. The Raiders did not go down without a valiant effort with Emma Button leading the way as she scored 17. The ladies finished the season with an 8-14 record putting them in 5th place in the Lackawanna Division IV Standings. They clinched the 4th seed in district playoffs and will face off against Holy Cross on Tuesday. A win would advance them to the semifinals. They will love all the support they can get as they look to defeat the Crusaders!
In wrestling, the team as a whole was not in action while they recover from the long season and gear up for districts. Some of the team participated in Junior Varsity Districts, however. Owen Martin, Sam Callahan, and Torin Fissel all traveled to Delaware Valley on Saturday to compete. All three wrestlers found success in some form with each grabbing at least one win. Torin Fissel went 1-2 on the day and was unfortunately eliminated.
Owen Martin and Sam Callahan both took 4th place in the tournament. For Owen, this was his first action after an injury sustained in the beginning of the year. He went 2-2 for the tournament. Sam, who is in his first year of wrestling, had the most success going 3-2. The entire team will participate in the district tournament Friday and Saturday at Wilkes-Barre Area High School with the chance of advancing beyond to the regional tournament. Make sure to clear the schedule and go cheer on the Raider wrestlers!
For the boys’ basketball team, they rewrote history here at Blue Ridge becoming the first boys’ basketball team to be league or district champions. If you recall last week’s recap, the boys were tied with Forest City for the league championship. If the results held, the two would play each other for the right to the title of champion. The Raiders held up their end of the deal with two wins on the road this week. The first came on Tuesday against Riverside, who had bested them earlier in the season. The boys’ held tough winning 55-52. Dalton Rutter had his best game of the year when it counted scoring 13 for the winning side. Connor McNally tried his best to will the Vikings to the win with 21 points. Thursday was a blowout for the Raiders, beating Montrose 68-30. The Raiders had four players score double digit points with Connor Cranage leading the way at 18. He finished the season on the same tear he started on. For Forest City, Elk Lake was able to pull off the upset on Thursday to clinch the league title for Blue Ridge. The boys’ finished with a stunning record of 19-3 overall bringing. They will go into district playoffs as the number two seed giving them a first round bye. They will wait on the results of the Lackawanna Trail-Elk Lake game on Wednesday. The team will then face one of these two on Saturday with the chance of going to the district championship game. Come out and watch the boys’ attempt to further rewrite the history books!
