News In Brief: Veterans Breakfast

By: Emily McCarthy/Junior Writer

How it came about

The Blue Ridge Leo Club hosted their annual veteran’s day breakfast held at the Blue Ridge High School on November 10, 2023. The organization is run by the family and consumer science teacher, Kristen Latting. Latting has been the advisor for Leo Club for the past 20 years, along with running the Veterans Day breakfast for 15 plus years.

Latting says:  “The event began after a seventh grade Leo Club member suggested the best way to say thank you was with a breakfast before the assembly.”

The tradition, and what it means to us

The Leo Club has held the breakfast every year since, creating a tradition throughout not only for the club but also for the school.

Latting says: “Every year we have lots of support. All the Leo’s want to help out and pass on a “thank you” to former military members. And the response is always positive. Everyone is so appreciative and loves that we keep the tradition alive. Personally, I love seeing all of the veterans and chatting with them each year!”

Along with the breakfast, the Leo Club also makes cards prior to the event, allowing students and faculty to express their true thanks.

The Meaning of Veterans Day, A Poem

by Blue Ridge High School graduate, Paige MacConnell

America, America, the great United States

It truly is amazing the freedom it creates

Represented not only by the red, white, and blue

The men and women who’ve fought or are fighting are very prominent too

You may better know these heroes as Veterans of war

No matter what they did, they all helped this nation’s core

Whether tending to the wounded or being right out on the field

The fate of the battle isn’t the only thing that there is to yield

It is our Veterans’ sacrifice as well as their service to fight

That is the reason freedom is kept and we can sleep soundly at night

Without our Veterans, we wouldn’t be where we are today

I don’t even want to imagine our country being such a way

For these reasons mentioned above and oh so many more

It is clear why our nation rises above the rest and thrives and soars

On this day, November 11th, we honor our nation’s backbone

We thank all the Veteran’s for doing all that we couldn’t have done alone

Such bravery and courage to step up for our nation’s sake

Each and everyone of you deserve all the honor we can make

Today is the day to remember all those who’ve lost their lives

As well as the day to honor those who continue to thrive

You all have done so much, leaving an impact bigger than one can imagine

You all really are the reasons why we have the best country to live in

So God bless the United States and may its freedom continue to ring

And on this Veteran’s Day, I’d like to thank each one for truly everything
