New Highschool Text Books Are Flooding In

By: Peyton Gelinger/Junior Writer

There are some textbooks still in use at Blue Ridge High School that are almost two decades old! With students needing newer and more updated materials, some Blue Ridge classes are receiving new textbooks.

Mrs. Vaccaro, a high school science teacher, is receiving textbooks for a couple of subjects. Vaccaro’s 8th grade science class is receiving new textbooks along with new materials this year. Honors/AP Physics will also be receiving new textbooks in the next year or so to come. Vaccaro has said that she “thinks some of the science books need to be updated, but I am already seeing time and money being invested to make these changes.”

Mr. Sokoloski, A Blue Ridge math teacher, is receiving new textbooks for Honors Algebra 2 and Algebra 2 next school year. Their current books are nearly 15 years old. However, Sokoloski stated that “Textbooks are becoming a thing of the past in our digital age. I envision online texts that are more interactive and provide practice and support for students in the course. Also, with our school policy regarding reduced or no homework I could imagine that a classroom ‘set’ would be sufficient to have as texts for my courses.”

There are still classes or subjects that have older textbooks, and some of them may not be in the best shape. Sokoloski added that “many of the text books are in rough shape, but most of them can be used as is.” Vaccaro also mentioned, “the books I’m using right now for Physics and Chemistry are fine. The 8th grade books last year were in bad shape; I’m so glad they are gone.”

One thing everyone should know is that textbooks are expensive. It is hard to get new textbooks every couple years for all subjects. “I wish students knew how valuable these textbooks are so they could take care of them, money spent on them is a significant investment by the school,” Vaccaro stressed to the Raider Reader.

So as students receive new textbooks, whether it be this year or in years to come, or if they are still using the older textbooks, remember to take good care of them to ensure they stay in a better condition for longer. Even if you do keep your textbooks in a good condition, just remember, you may be getting better textbooks soon!
