Getting the Ingredients for College: Obtaining the Dough

By: Kaelin Hughes/Content Editor

Welcome to the new Raider Reader series, “Getting the Ingredients for College!”  In these articles, we will discuss the many things about college that cause uneasiness in students, from deciding what college you will attend, majors, and most important of all, covering tuition costs.  In this story, we’ll cover “obtaining the dough,” or financial aid to cover tuition costs.

Just about every college will offer some form of a financial aid package, where scholarships are awarded based on performance in school and on SAT/ACT scores.  These colleges can offer scholarships for a plethora of things, like a reference from an alumni, or if your parents or relatives have previously attended the institution; the only limit on scholarships for a college is the dollar amount!

Along with financial aid packages from colleges, the federal government offers aid through their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  This application qualifies students for grants or loans, where the money goes directly to your school, which is applicable to your tuition, fees, and room and board.

Besides receiving aid from colleges and the federal government, there are many scholarships that you can apply for online!  Some websites include Niche, ScholarSnapp, and FastWeb.  The middle/high school guidance office will also start to roll out scholarship opportunities soon, so stay on the lookout and listen closely!

For more information on paying for college and applying for aid, Blue Ridge High School will be hosting a financial aid event on November 6th, 2019 at 6:30PM. You will be able to have your questions regarding college tuitions answered, and receive expert advice! To RSVP to this event, please contact the guidance office.

Thinking about the expenses of college can brew queasiness and anxiety in one’s stomach, but one thing to remember is that everyone feels the same way! One way or another, you will be able to earn some financial aid to cover your college costs, and it will be okay. Just remember, don’t give up just because you feel like you won’t receive much; any amount is a good amount! Financial aid is available to anyone, so don’t hesitate to take charge and obtain some dough!
