Question: How do I know who my real friends are?

Answer: Knowing who your real friends compared to knowing who your fake friends are is a difficult thing to figure out. These days, many people focus on always putting up a good image in front of their peers and even friends, which causes friendships and relationships to become fake, even if the other party is unaware of the change.

Despite this difficulty, discovering the truth about the people who you spend most of your time with is an important thing. The people in which you spend most of your time will influence you and your actions. They shape the decisions you make and either allow you to grow as a person or inhibit you from becoming a better version of yourself.

Now you are probably asking what it takes to discover who your real friends are.

Try to look for signs of bad friends:

  • Do they leave your side when times are tough and you need them the most?
  • Quality over quantity; It’s better to have a couple of true friends over a bunch of fake ones.
  • They cancel plans, but go out with other people instead.
  • They spread false rumors about you, ones that they know will hurt you the most.
  • They blame everything that goes wrong on you.
  • They will lie to you to try and hide the things they have done behind your back.
  • They get you into bad situations.
  • They make you do things that you don’t want to do
  • They seem like they are listening, but don’t actually hear you.
  • They will be nice one minute, and then rude that next
  • They will want to be friends with you just to get things from you.

Friends are hard to come by, so make sure that you have the right ones by your side. If you feel like your friends aren’t being true to you, then you should walk away from it. Fake friends take a toll on your mental health. It’s never easy to leave, but sometimes it’s just going to be the best for you. Remember that friends aren’t supposed to hurt you, they are supposed to be there for you through thick and thin.
