Blue Ridge senior Desiree Alvarez was recently awarded the gold medal at the national level of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program for her 2016 sculpture of “The Bean,” a mask made to demonstrate her love of color.

Her art teacher, Sarrah Dibble Camburn, says “I, of course, feel really proud of her. I just signed her up for it–she did everything on her own.”

Alvarez’s work was judged by panels of creative professionals and she is now recognized as one of the most talented young artists in the nation. Nearly 320,000 works of art and writing were submitted. To be recognized at the national level, one has to be in the top 1%. The 1% have been invited to attend a ceremony Thursday, June 2 at Carnegie Hall.

Freshman Micah Mullen said, “Her works show how the beauty in life can be as simple as butterflies to a mask made with beans. She shows encouragement, and is able to express her thoughts and feelings in art.”
