[slideshow_deploy id=’28524′] Thirty five members of the Blue Ridge Leo Club and its advisor Kristen Latting ventured out on a shopping trip for the annual Toys N Tots toy drive on Monday, December 18, 2018. Club members purchased presents for 89 other students in the district which were given out during the Sharing Parade on Thursday, December 20.
According to Latting, each Leo Club member who participates in the shopping trip receives an envelope with a tag that indicates age and gender. Shoppers are also required to stay within a budget.
That budget, says Latting, is a result of student fundraising. This year money was raised from hat days and hoagie sales. Hat days, which take place with prior approval from administration, are days during which students are permitted to wear a hat for the entire school day if they have paid one dollar for the privilege. The money then goes to the club which is sponsoring the hat day.
Prior to the shopping trip, says Latting, all the fundraising money is added together and each student shopper is given an equal amount to purchase gifts.
“This year,” she says, “some students even put their own money in to get more gifts.”
In addition to Latting, guidance counselor Paula Finn and ESL teacher Trish Gilboy also attended the trip.
Student shoppers had a chance to enjoy a meal out, too. Students dined at TGI Fridays in Vestal, NY.
“We had lots of fun,” states Latting. “Overall, the trip was a great success!”
