Nine-Pointer Wins Big Buck Contest for Stepniak

By: Brooke Kelly/Junior Writer

Junior Dawson Stepniak is the 2023-2024 Big Buck Contest winner at Blue Ridge High School, says teacher Kristen Heller, who oversees the contest.

Stepniak nabbed his buck right before dark on the last day of rifle season.

“It is a nine point but we didn’t get it measured yet; it’s at the taxidermist,” says Stepniak.

Stepniak, who used to tag along with his dad when he went hunting, says on his own he’s gotten two does and four bucks.

“I’ve been hunting ever since I was little. I used to go with my dad when he went hunting and we’ve made a lot of memories.”

He says his most recent deer, the one that ensured his win in the contest, “is the biggest buck I have ever gotten, but my other nine point had a thicker rack.”

Stepniak says the deer will go to good use: “We are most likely going to make jerky and I am getting a shoulder mount.”

Heller, a physical education and health teacher at Blue Ridge says she started the contest as something fun to do for the kids that hunt.

“It’s just a way to acknowledge or recognize those who do hunt.”
