Spring Sports

By: Carissa Zawiski/Sophomore Writer

It’s that time of year that Spring Sports are starting! The sports that will be played include, baseball, softball, track, and boy’s volleyball. There have been open gyms and practices for all of these sports preparing the athletes for the upcoming season that began on March 4th.

Coach Billy Marvin has coached the baseball team for the past 7 years. When we asked Marvin how he thinks the season will go, he responded, “I think the season is going to go well. We have a great group of kids that have played together for a long time, and we have a deep team that should keep us competitive against whomever we play.” Marvin also mentioned that his favorite part of coaching is setting goals and trying to reach them.  He stated, “It’s an adventure and each year is a different adventure.”

When we asked senior Ben Burchell, who has been playing baseball for 13 years, what his favorite part about playing baseball is, he responded, “My favorite part is definitely pitching, and I feel like this year is going to be a great one because we have a lot of good senior players and a lot of experience.”

As for Softball, Mr. Joe Collins as been the coach for the past four years, and is back to coach once again.

Junior Olivia Martin has been playing softball for eleven years and when asked how the season will go, she stated, “We should do pretty good, but there is always room for improvement”.

Mrs. Amber Turner has been the coach for the track team for three years, with this being her third year.

Senior Karris Fazzi, a member of the track team says, “I think the season this year is going to be successful. We have new kids that we would have never expected to be on the team, and it’s great to see new faces.” Fazzi has been doing track for 4 years, and with this year being her fifth and final year she mentioned, “Being the last time running for Blue Ridge is sad because I do enjoy running with Jack, Brandon, and KayLeen. It’s hard leaving the people I’ve grown with for years, but I have a great future ahead of me.”

The last spring sport that will be played is boy’s volleyball. Lori Zick, who is the coach for girls volleyball, is also the coach for boys volleyball. Zick stated, “This is my 6th season with the boys team, and I think we have a very good opportunity to be a competitive team this year. It all depends on how hard these guys work and how much they can come together as a team.”

Junior Cameron Franks stated, “I feel really good about this year. We have a really talented team this year that likes to play together along with a young core coming up who could help us along the way.”

Games will begin very soon, so please come out and show your school spirit, and support your Blue Ridge athletes!
