On Friday, April 26th, the Raider Reader staff, along with advisor Kimberly Davenport, attended the Tom Bigler Journalism Conference at Wilkes University where they were recognized for excellence in journalism. The staff went home with multiple awards, as follows:
Honorable Mention in Sports News/Feature – Tyler Hillard’s Fall Sports Wrap Up
Second Place in Sports Video/Photography – Tyler Hillard’s Athlete Feature on Ben Bleck
Honorable Mention in Opinion/Editorial – Kaelin Hughes’ Music in Class: Beneficial or Detrimental?
Second Place in Online Layout/Design – Webmaster Daniel Tierney, and co-editors in chief Allyssa Johnson and Morgan Mansfield
Mrs. Alicia Ross and her AP United States Government and Politics class accompanied the staff in order to attend workshops in the areas of communication and government policy.

Kaelin Hughes is a determined second year journalism student taking on her senior year at Blue Ridge. She has participated in Leo Club, National Honor Society, and theater. When you don’t have any idea of where Kaelin is, she can be found doing anything music or theater related, stressing out over classes, or sleeping. Her future goals consist of attending college, but unsure of a specific path, since her ideas change at any given moment, but she’s working on it, hoping to go through the motions of life.
